He'll learn much better if you go with 'if you don't eat the rock I will show you some love/treats' put a juicy rock right in front of him just begging to be eaten...if he goes to eat it tell him no and if he listens go in with the treat. if he continues to sit and not eat the rock continue with the treats in intervals. Do it in sessions...once a day for two weeks or whatever.
